Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be used in the treatment of many health conditions women may encounter. Current evidence suggests it may be helpful in the treatment of a broad range of issues such as irregular or painful periods, some fertility disorders, premenstrual difficulties and menopausal symptoms. It can also be used to support women trying to conceive (naturally or with assisted reproductive technologies) and for some pregnancy related symptoms.

Acupuncture is an increasingly sought after treatment option for couples having difficulty conceiving. Depending on what (if any) western diagnosis has been given as a cause for fertility issues, acupuncture and Chinese herbs may be used on their own to support regulation of a woman’s menstrual cycle and optimisation of egg quality and/or assist with male factor infertility; or acupuncture can be used alongside western assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs). Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years in China to support fertility. With more recent advances in technology and western science developments in fertility support, acupuncture can work as an adjunct to these other treatments (including IVF and IUI) to promote successful outcomes.
In early pregnancy acupuncture can be used to promote relaxation, reduce morning sickness symptoms, relieve stress and anxiety and promote a healthy functioning immune system and healthy blood flow to the uterus. Later in pregnancy it may be used to alleviate aches and pains, promote good sleep, promote relaxation and decrease stress and anxiety as well as other gastro-intestinal symptoms such as reflux, constipation and other general pregnancy related issues.
