Koru Healing is a Ferrymead based clinic at Unit 6, 27 Waterman Place, Christchurch. Owner-operator Tracey Shewan has helped hundreds of people find relief from pain and aid recovery in the 15 years she has been in practice.
Supporting her father through his cancer journey was the catalyst that set Tracey on the path to becoming an acupuncturist. “He was in and out of hospital over several years and often in a lot of pain. I found that doing foot massage was really helpful to him. I was drawn to learning more about complementary health therapies. It felt like a natural orientation for me,” she says.
Attending an introductory weekend on acupuncture and Chinese medicine confirmed her interest, “I appreciate the holistic approach to healing that Chinese medicine offers. There is a focus on addressing both current symptoms and discovering what underlying causes may be present. I find this an effective approach for establishing long term change, rather than just symptom management."
In terms of her approach to working with clients, she states "I very much like to work with people to develop strategies and practices that they can incorporate in their daily life to support recovery, balance and increased well-being alongside acupuncture treatment. The philopsophy and approach in Chinese medicine has so much to offer in this way.”
Tracey completed four years of training to receive a Diploma in Acupuncture from the New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine.
She is a Registered Acupuncturist with the Chinese Medicine Council of New Zealand and a member of the New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists. These memberships require the completion of at least 22 hours of professional development each year to retain membership.
Reducing symptoms and relieving pain is Tracey’s aim in the first instance when working with a client. This hinges on listening to the client first and foremost.
“It’s very important to me that I really listen to people and get a clear sense of what their goals from treatment are. I also like to ensure I clearly convey how acupuncture and the other therapies I offer may work for their condition and what they can expect during and after treatment,” Tracey says.
Her approach to healing is a rational one based on many years of clinical experience and evidence backed for many conditions. “Acupuncture helps to increase blood flow, alleviate pain, stimulate endogenous healing processes and reduce inflammation.”
Every individual’s recovery needs will be unique, but in general, Tracey expects to see some change in a client’s condition after one or two sessions.
